Hijab has always been a main part of the mission of the prophets, religions spiritual men and erudite in a way that one of the duties of the erudite of the religion and society is the subject of chastity. The base of Islam is the salvation and redemption of human, and the religious beliefs and ethical and canonical commandments related to the woman`s hijab in the divine laws have been issued based on this logical philosophy and wisdom. Observing the Islamic hijab, woman pays attention to the refinement and purification of the soul and carnal interests, provides divine proximity and prepares the arena of spiritual growth for men by controlling her look. Hijab is benefited by social efficiency which controls the physical desires, agitation and dissolute socialization, increases the firmness of the family`s system, prevents the disintegration of marriage`s stable center and provides the social security. The Islamic hijab and veil and followingly the maintenance of family`s system are valuable due to providing the human`s prosperity and being as the source of divine proximity.


The Importance and Necessity of Hijab:

The importance of The Islamic hijab is to an extent that The Exalted God states it as a necessity in lots of Quran`s Surahs and considers it as the human`s protector against many physical and mental illnesses. Hijab is not only allocated to woman from the viewpoint of Islam; it is a kind of veil which exists in the relationship between man and woman. Hijab hinders immorality, pretension and is the protector of respect and rules of chastity and modesty in Islam. The purpose of Islam concerning hijab is that the Muslim woman can do her basic duties and mission with complete freedom that maintaining the human`s generation, engaging in the dignities of house and house-keeping, training of children and paying attention to it are considered as of her duties. Islam has necessitated hijab as the important element of the maintenance and glorification of individual characteristic and stabilization of family`s foundation and social chastity and ethics. Also, it has introduced Holy Joseph and Virgin Mary as the role model of chastity and purity. So, the importance and necessity of hijab will be determined according to the afore-mentioned matters.


The concept of Hijab:

Islamic hijab: includes the maintenance of woman`s modesty; firstly, with closing the eyes and not looking at the strangers (a man in front of whom a woman is to cover her hair) and secondly, covering the body with chador. So, hijab literally means the obstacle, veil and cover. However, every cover is not hijab; of course, a cover is named as hijab that it is occurred by being hidden. Hijab from the viewpoint of family environment:

one of the fundamental elements which forms the children`s characteristic, is the environment which is consisted of family, school and society. The healthy environment in which no indecent words and reprehensible deed especially unchaste deeds is said and done has a great influence on the spiritual and ethical characteristic of children, and immoral environment are very effective in the unstableness and fall of their characteristic. So, the children`s environment has great importance and the immoral environment influences the fluctuation and fall of their characteristic very much; hence, the children`s environment should be clean from the indecent and immoral deeds completely from the infancy up to adolescence.


The effects and importance of hijab:

The spiritual achievements:

Hijab is the wings of the earth`s angles, the woman who has hijab has selected the God between herself and her God and has turned to the religion`s commandments among the commandments of religion and carnal desires.

The immunity and serenity of woman:

A woman, who is not seen, motivates no greed towards herself. The security and peace of mind are the obvious effects of Islamic hijab. The human being feels more peace under the protection of a protector. The religious hijab is also the woman`s keeper against the indecent glance and probable damages which gives woman immunity and calmness. If this hijab becomes more complete, the percent of security and protection will be increased.

The health and beauty:

The Islamic hijab is the manifestation of the spiritual beauties of woman. Undoubtedly, the religious hijab insures the woman against many calamities and illnesses, and make firm her freshness and beauty. The difficulty of hijab is the insurance premium which the woman pays for the maintenance of her calmness and health, because hijab is a veil which prevents the entrance of the shots of glance, vain words and the other problem towards her safe environment. A woman who has no hijab is vulnerable. When the woman comes out from her religious hijab, lots of calamities destroy her health. Hijab keeps woman more durable, healthful and cleaner.

The decrease of mischief:

Hijab of women and dignified behavior of youths have always been a strong barrier against the Satan`s temptations. The comparison of the statistics of sexual crimes in the society indicates that the women, who have hijab, play an important role in the decrease of social mischiefs. Most of sexual crimes will be removed by the chastity and purity of youths and women hijab. If the chastity exists in looking, behavior and deed, the sexual agitations and fake excitements and love which have involved many young persons, are annihilated, and the ethical health dominate the society.

The mental calmness:

The lack of limit between men and women and freedom of the wrong and dissipated socializations increase the sexual excitements and agitations. The sexual instinct is a powerful, deep and huge instinct. If it is submitted more, it will become more rebellious like the fire which will be blazed whenever more feed is given. As the human whether woman or man doesn`t become satiated with the ownership of wealth and status in the arena of wealth and position, no man becomes satiated with the ownership of beautiful women and no woman becomes satiated with drawing men`s attention and possession of their heart. On the other hand, the unlimited demand is not accomplished willingly or unwillingly, and it is accompanied by a kind of deprivation. Also, when a human doesn`t reach her/his wishes, this matter causes he/she to be involved in the psychic disorders and mental diseases, for these tense mental pressures have increased in the West`s world. The reason of this matter is the dissemination of nakedness and numerous sexual agitations which is accomplished by newspapers, shows, gatherings and parties, and the freedom of the relationship between man and woman causes them to be involved unlawful sexual relationships whenever they want. Also, we all know that human’s operational power reaches its climax in youth period and the sexual instinct has so much power that conquers the instinct of existence`s maintenance and selfishness, and it becomes too powerful which the person annihilates him/herself in addition to the mental diseases which the person is involved in them.

The firmness of family unification:

There is no doubt that everything which causes the family connection to become strong and the sincerity of wife and husband`s relationship to be created, is useful for family center and efforts should be made to create it. On the contrary, everything which causes the relationship of spouses to be weakened is harmful for life, and we should fight against it. The allocation of sexual enjoyments to the family environment in the framework of lawful marriage strengthens the connection of wife and husband and causes the young spouses to connect to each other. The marriage was benefited by great importance in the past times and it was one of the sweet wishes of young people. So, the spouses considered it as the cause of luckiness and bliss of each other. However, the sexual triumphs will be and reached to an upper limit in the framework of an unlawful marriage. The free and unrestrained socializations of boys and girls have caused the marriage to become as a duty, obligation and limitation.

The stabilization of society:

The extension of sexual enjoyments and gratifications towards the society causes the labor force and society`s activity to be weakened. Unlike the opinion of hijab`s opponents who considers the veil as the cause of the paralysis of half of the society`s people, being without hijab and dissemination of free sexual relations cause the society`s force to become paralyzed. What paralyzes the woman`s force, is the imprisonment of her talents not veil and chastity which are the important factor for growth and florescence of woman. The young people especially girls can be safe from the bothers of mean and voyeur men via resorting to veil and sexual chastity, and their talents will be flourished more. The Islamic protector and veil are not a limitation that causes the woman to be jailed in house and deprived from working and education; of course, the veil and chastity help the confinement of the sexual enjoyments in family environment, mental sanitation of the society, immunity against the triteness and decadence and maintenance of the dignities of working and activity`s environment. Covering the body, hair and womanish adornment except for face and hand are not the barrier and interrupter of activity.


The roots of not having good hijab:

Debauchery: If the human doesn`t notice the religious and ethical values and answers his carnal desires positively, he is changed into a debauched person due to benefiting the lustful power which is in his soul. Some women pay too much attention to clothes, make-up, adornment and exhibitionism due to debauchery. So, they spend a lot of cost and time on these works.

Poor faith: not having hijab is the shortage of religious culture. The divine commandments such as Islamic hijab have been informed to human being by God and the observing is a must. So, for the people who have misgivings about believing in God and their heart is not certain about believing in God and the doomsday, no improvement will be occurred until this theological problem is solved for believing in God is the mother of  all values.

Westernization: imitating the west has always been one of the problems of Muslim women that without any thinking and analysis on the life of western women is occurred. The base of this imitation is ignorance and lust. The west has taken the hijab of women and has not give them any thing instead.  

Marriage: Some girls and young people consider the show-off and then having relationship with a stranger as a bridge for getting married. They have thought that the assertion of womanish beauties can attract the young people towards them unaware that they don`t undergo to marry them with these pretensions, relationship and friendship with youngsters and cheerfulnesses that they have with girls. The most impious man of the society gets married with the most virtuous girl and selects her. The impious youngsters welcome the pretentious girls for their temporary enjoyments not marriage.

Weakness of prudency: The weakness of this characteristic is resulted from the weakness of believing in the Origin and the Resurrection Day, and being without hijab is as the obvious examples of impudence which is resulted from the weakness of faith. Hijab and prudency are indivisible, and when there is a manifestation of prudency in a woman, her veil is observed seriously. The bashful women are the ones who cover themselves completely and are ashamed of presenting their body, hair and adornments. The impudent friends, dull films, ignorance of high values of chastity, prudency and culture of family especially the morale of parents cause the women and young girls to become unveiled.


Role of promiscuity and not having Hijab in the dissemination of corruption:

The extraordinary influence of environment on construction and creativity is not hidden for anyone. So, every affair which causes the general chastity and purity, intellectual, mental and ethical moderation of the society and the growth of the human`s characteristic, is useful and necessary for society. In the view of the fact that the human`s life is a public and social one, the society is like the house and family that the maintenance of the boundary of chastity and ethics is vital in it. Its purity and pollution play an important role in the destiny of the people especially children and the new generation. The thoughtlessness and lack of a good and true veil are a very mortal (major) sin like this matter that a woman who doesn`t observe the Islamic veil and dignities, becomes the cause of ignorance and forgetfulness of divine watchfulness and also blindness of hearts whenever she socializes in society wide. She disseminates the abnormal and corruptive sin and behavior of thoughtlessness (indifference) and pretension and causes the other women to be involved in this destructive disaster from one side, and on the other hand, she attracts the hearts of men especially the young people instinct of them due to emotional and sexual influences of woman on men. The dissemination and spread of sexual deviations and severe physical and mental pain are the harmful results of this matter which darken human`s day. God says in Quran that the persons who like the spread of prostitution and vice, their retribution is severe while the deeds and word disseminate the vice. The vice means every behavior and word whose heinousness is major whether it is being without a veil or lack of good and true veil or sexual deviations. So, when the youngsters and women throw down the prudency`s clothes and religious cover, they become like a mobile fire that they instigate (set on fire) everywhere they set foot in there and cause the characteristic of youngsters and teenagers to be involved in fire. Really, there is not blaze which is worse than this matter which burns the crop of abilities and talents of themselves and new generation and annihilates the characteristic and humanity of themselves.


The Summary and conclusion:

The subject of hijab and specific cover of women did not and do not allocate to Islam. The specific veil of women has been posed in all heavenly religions such as Christianity and Judaism. As the matter of Hijab has existed in Zoroastrianism, and a hijab near the Islamic hijab is observed among the traditional women who live according to ancestor`s manner and have not been under the influence of the dominant culture of time. The historic remains obtained from the former nations and tribes in various creeds and cultures indicate that the women have had more hijab than men. The pictures of Virgin Mary in the older paintings of Christians or the hijab of monks who have endowed themselves to the spiritual matters and serving God`s servants following the Virgin Mary are the common hijab`s criterions among the Muslims and they are considered as a complete veil from the viewpoint of Quranic and narrative criterions.

This reality indicates that the base of women`s hijab have not been a geographical, historical phenomenon which has originated from the climate condition, Islam`s origin or private interest of Holy Mohammad (PBUH) and people or specific situation of the people of Arabian Peninsula; of course, the Islam`s view is in the approval of the former heavenly religion`s instructions.  


Suggestions for developing hijab in the society:

Improving the faith and belief: belief and faith should be firm and deep in men and women.

Putting sublime examples as our role model: role models play an important behavioral and mental role.  

• Encouragement: women should be encouraged for observing hijab in the universities and schools.

• Presenting useful and educational programs and films especially by TV has an pervasive effect and can be useful in observing complete religious hijab, controlling their behavior and ethics.

• Paying attention to the noble and religious culture that enjoys a great value in the society.

• Developing the culture of zeal.

• Teaching the importance and necessity of hijab in the society

What is hijab?

The word "hijab" comes from the Arabic "hajaba," which means to conceal or hide from view. In general terms, it refers to Islamic modest dressing for women. But it has come to signify the headscarf, which is the covering many Muslim women use to hide their hair, neck, and often bosom.

What does Islamic dress for women exactly entail?

Islam has no fixed uniform of dress for Muslim women. But there are two requirements, which come from the Qur’an and hadith (verified sayings of the Prophet Muhammad): First, a woman’s body should be covered such that only her face, hands, and feet are revealed. Secondly, the clothing must be loose enough so that the shape of a woman’s body is not visible.

Other parameters (as stated in hadiths) are that women shouldn’t dress so as to look like men, women shouldn’t dress in a way similar to those who don’t believe in God, and the clothing should be modest, neither ragged nor overly fancy.

It is important to remember that Islam teaches Muslims that the concept of modest dress doesn’t just mean covering the body, but it also has to do with behaviors, manners, speech, and public appearance. Modesty is a total package, with dress being one part of it.

Why is covering the head important?

Strictly speaking, covering the hair is just one part of a Muslim woman’s dress. Covering all other parts of the body (except for the face, hands, and feet) is also important. But as women around the world adapt Islamic dressing to the fashions of their country, more and more it is the hijab, or headscarf, that is constant and marks a woman as a Muslim.

Is covering up mandated by the Qur’an?

Hijab and modest dressing is mandated in the Qur’an, though some Muslims argue that it is not a strict requirement but merely a strong suggestion (that is open to individual interpretation. A few passages in the Qur’an refer to an Islamic dress code:

"Say to the believing man that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that will make for greater purity for them; and Allah is well acquainted with all that they do. And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; and that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what must ordinarily appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their women, or the slaves whom their right hands possess, or male servants free of physical needs, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex; and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments ..." (Qur'an 24:30-31)

This verse highlights three points: That a woman shouldn’t show her beauty except when faced with uncontrolled factors, like the wind blowing her clothes; that the headscarf should cover the hair, neck, and the bosom; and that women need not cover up in front of certain men (husbands, fathers, sons, etc.).

Further hadiths give other details. One of the most quoted is the following:

“Ayesha reported that Asmaa, the daughter of Abu Bakr came to the Messenger of Allah (SWT) while wearing thin clothing. He approached her and said, ‘O Asmaa! When a girl reaches the menstrual age, it is not proper that anything should remain exposed except this and this.’ He pointed to the face and hands.” (Abu Dawood)

Why do women choose to cover themselves or wear the hijab?

This is an intensely personal decision. Of course not all Muslim women follow these rules of modest dressing. Some adapt these rules to modern times (like wearing a headscarf over Western-style clothing that still covers the body). Some women argue that modesty is a state of mind and has nothing to do with clothing. Still others say that what is written in the Qur’an and in hadiths cannot be denied--that Muslim women must cover up.

Those who choose to follow Islamic dress codes do so for myriad reasons: They feel compelled to honor what the Qur’an asks of them. Or they feel covering up will identify them to the world as a Muslim woman. Or they feel that covering up will give them safety and the liberty to move about freely. Still others say that covering up and downplaying their physical beauty allows them to be appreciated for their mind, not their body. And for some women, it’s not a choice. Some Muslim countries (like Saudi Arabia) require Muslim women to cover up. And many families around the world insist that their women follow the code of Islamic dress.

Why do some Muslim women cover completely and others just cover their hair?

Muslim women make choices when it comes to Islamic dress. Some girls, perhaps in copying their mothers, cover from a very young age (though a girl is required to cover up when they hit puberty). Other women begin covering later in life. Some don’t ever cover their hair. Many Muslim women in North America adapt Western fashions to Islamic dress by wearing a headscarf over long-sleeve tops and pants or jeans. Other women, keeping in mind the requirement that Islamic dress should be loose, choose to wear robes over their clothes that hide the shape of their body. At the end of the day, it all comes down to personal choice.

Why do some Muslim women not cover at all?

Again, the decision to cover or not is a personal one. Some who don’t cover their hair or expose other parts of their body (or wear tight clothing) argue that modesty is an inner quality that has nothing to do with clothes. Other women argue that the requirements of Islamic dress as stated in the Qur’an and hadith must be adapted for modern times. They say that now, especially in Western countries where so many women don’t cover, practicing Islamic dress draws attention to a woman instead of deflecting attention away.

What is the penalty for not adhering to Muslim dress?

There is no Qur’anic penalty for not adhering to Muslim dress. But some hadiths describe the Prophet Muhammad as saying that if a woman doesn’t follow the rules of Islamic dress, her place in paradise, along with her husband’s, father’s' and sons’ places in paradise, will be jeopardized. And when it comes to the Qur’an, strict Muslims believe that if it’s written in the holy book, it must be followed.

Does it get hot, covering everything up?

Speaking as someone who wears the hijab (though I don’t wear robes over my clothes), it does get hot sometimes, especially on a very hot, humid day. I usually feel the heat the most on my neck under my scarf. But a person can get used to anything. And I’m so used to wearing long sleeves, long pants, or skirts and a headscarf that I don’t feel the heat as much as when I first starting wearing hijab three years ago. In fact my headscarf and full-coverage clothing often protect me from the sun and make me feel cooler than when I’m at home, wearing whatever I want, and exposed to the heat of summer. And I must say, wearing the headscarf has saved me from many a bad hair day (though that’s not why I wear it!)

Are there Islamic modesty requirements for men?

In Islam, men and women are required to control their desires. They must avoid being alone with members of the opposite sex outside of marriage (or close family). Men are allowed to expose more of their body but are encouraged by Muslim scripture to cover up and avoid tight clothing. During prayer, they must be covered from the naval to their knees.
